ASSIGNMENT A : Advert analysis

What is an advert? An advertisement is a way of marketing a product to sell. You can show an advert on tv, via the internet, in newspapers.

Glee 'Chevy commercial' - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reTrzx44_VQ
Chevrolet made their advertisement seem like an actual episode of Glee, with the usual Glee recap they have at the beginning of every episode. They used the glee cast and they performed a musical number called 'See the USA (in your Chevrolet)'

Form
This ad is anti realist and realist ad. It's anti realist as it isn't a real life situation as it's a fictional story line and the characters aren't real. Yet it is also a realist ad because real life people feature in it and it is also shot in real life way.

Style
This advert is a parody advert as they the advert is based around the TV show 'Glee'. It includes the cast from the TV and the advert is as if you were watching an episode of glee. The advert is based around the glee club participating in a commercial and if they do they will all get Chevrolet Cruze's, but little do they know its all part of Sue Sylvsters plan - if you participate in any ad's you get disqualified from competing in competitions.

Technical Methods
The mis-en-scene in the scene includes what they are wearing. Glee is set in high school so they are wearing smart/casual clothing that is appropriate for school. When set in school theres a lot of warm colours where as when they are performing the musical number its cold as theres lots of blues and greys.
They use a lot of close ups at the start of the scene when they're talking which show's their facial expressions well. In these screenshots you can see that the lady in the first one is showing that she's smirking as she's trying to trick the glee club and in the second imagine she's shocked that they're all supposedly getting cars.

The pace of the cuts are quite first when they're talking and having conversations.
Some sound effects they use at the start are used in the Glee episodes so people recognise the effects.
When the musical performance starts the camera moves along with 'Rachel' who's singing. They also zoom into her when she sings as well. Lots of high angles are used so it looks as if we are looking down on the performance. The use of pan movement is used when it pans the car so you can see the front of the car.
Long shots are used so you can see everyone dancing and singing and so you can see the outfits everyones wearing. They use close ups when they are focusing on someone singing.

Selling Techniques
The selling techniques used in this advert is that they have used the actual cast from glee, so it uses celebrity endorsement. At the time the advert was made and released Glee was one of the biggest shows on TV and the cast were very popular so Chevrolet using this show and cast was clever as it would promote the brand massively and would also bring light to Glee, so they are both advertising each other. Using the actual Glee cast attracts a lot more people to watch the ad and therefore promotes Chevrolet. The target audience would be teenagers but also adults who drive. The advert was first released during the 2011 Superbowl, which over 110 million people watch. Generally the target audience would be adults who can drive and afford a fancy car.
They create a memory of an advert by using a song that is very catchy and within the lyrics of the song it's talking about driving a Chevrolet. Some of the lyrics being ' See the USA in your Chevrolet, America is asking you to call, Drive your Chevrolet in the USA' So promotion is also happening through the song the cast are performing.
At the very start of the advert they show the car they are selling and promoting.
The logo is on the floor and they use a high angled camera shot so they have the logo in view.

Characteristics of the product
For brand identity they do have the logo of the chevrolet logo plastered all over the ad. They do show different kinds of cars you can get ie cars with a roof and convertible cars. No USP's in the ad.

Apple Music Ad 2016https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQY3KUR3VzM

This advert is an advert of James Corden in a pitch meeting, pitching advert ideas to Apple Music representatives. The apple reps want simple ad's that can get the message across and explain what features apple music have to give. Instead, Corden pitches crazy ad's of him dressing up as iconic music stars, driving in deserts and diving into a body of water filled with 40 million apples.

Form
This is an realist ad as its set in the real world and in a real life situation. James Corden is sitting at a table with 3 other people and they are having a conversation about how they can advertise apple music. It's filmed as if you are watching the conversation. The target audience would be for children aged 11 onwards and adults. Children may have ipods or ipads an they would like to listen to music so may see the add and ask their parents. Parents also have the option of having a 'Family membership' option. Where they pay and can have their children on the same plan.

Style

It' s a humours advert as James Corden is a comedian and he adds his own twist onto it. He talks about possible adverts he could do, such as being David Bowie, the Spice Girls or Pharell. It's also parodic as he is doing parodies of being the different people, and Pharell appearing next to James pretending to be Pharell gives it a comedic aspect.  The next possible is dramatic,  James is driving in a desert and comes across a young boy who is begging for water, instead of handing him water, he then hands the boy an iphone. Handing him a phone instead of water may give it a humorous aspect.

Technical Methods

There are a lot of cuts in this advert and they are fairly quick, some cuts being quicker than others. In the first scenario The advert is based in an office, with big open windows and a stunning view for the back drop. 4 main people in the advert, they're all dressed in smart casual business attire. The colours are simple which could be similar to the apple product. Apple is based around being simple so them being in smart casual could also represent this.
They have an iphone and ipad placed on the table which they use when talking about what the service offers.
The use of sound is different in each scenario, for the scene where he is dressing up as different artists - songs  by that artist is played. For the second scene its dramatic music, same as the last scenario.
For most of the advert the camera angle is mostly on eye level with the 4 different people, this could be suggesting that we are on the same level as the public, and that they aren't any bigger or better than us. Shots are mainly medium shots, but when the camera is focused on Corden or if one of the apple executives is talking or explaining the product, then they use close ups. In the possible ad's that James suggests, long shots are used.

Selling Techniques
They use celebrity endorsement in this, they use James Corden - who is a major in the USA right now and is very popular in the UK. As he's a comedian he is able to bring his own twist to the advert. Corden is a very down to earth guy and has always stuck so his roots and he's a very family friendly guys so using him could suggest you can be successful and happy like him. Apple music have also recently picked up James's carpool karaoke series so Corden is working with apple.
The other 3 men and women in the ad are 3 executives of Apple Music.  Apple's senior vice president of internet software and services, Eddy Cue, Apple Music's head of global consumer marketing, Bozoma Saint John , and Beats co-founder Jimmy Lovine. This gives viewers an in site to the executives because they're only seen at Apple events so having them involved in marketing, boosts their profiles from beyond the Apple event stages.
They create a memory of the ad as it's very funny yet simple and they used a celebrity who is very popular. The logo fills the screen and then they do recap of what you get from apple music including, how much it costs and how its personal to you. It's a simple ad and apple is known for being simple and easy, and the end ends with everything you'll receive with apple music.

Characteristics of the product

Characteristics of the products are that you get over 40 million songs, music anywhere, even offline, handpicked playlists and a 3 months free trial. The brand identity comes into play here and the simple writing comes on screen just summarising some of the things you'll get with apple music.

Money Supermarket ad - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdeB1eGK57o .
They have a series of these ads with all the same actors in, the one i'm using is the latest release in the series of adverts.

In the first advert they released the ad was the most complained advert of 2015 but the lastest advert has been highly praised.
You have three men having a dance off in the middle of a empty car park - a builder and 2 workmen.

While i researched this ad i found out the dancers have names, Colin, Dave and Gary. There aren't any celebrity endorsements in any of the Money Supermarket adverts, but they don't need them as it's become such a well known series of adverts everyone knows the guys from the money supermarket ads.
Ironically since the ad's have started Colin and Dave have become 'celebrities'. They have had TV interviews, got thousands of followers on twitter and have become over night sensations.

Fifth Harmonys smash hit 'Worth it' begins and when this advert came out they were top of the charts so everyone knew the song and they are a girl group who are all beautiful, stunning and can all dance very well so they might have used the song as you can dance well to it.

Once the music begins Dave comes out in a suit and tie with a pair on denim shorts and a pair of black stilettos begins to twerk and dance his way around the car park and then builder named Gary comes out with a typical builders out fit on and then he pulls out a scaffolding pole and begins to pole dance.

After the builder has finished he carries on dancing and a well dressed man called Colin comes out and starts showing off some impressive moves.

The whole advert is very dramatic as the three men are taking the dance off so seriously which in turn brings the comedy aspect to the advert.

It's effective as you always remember the man dancing in heels and these adverts are so different to other products on the market and you remember these it's funny as a man dancing in heels having a dance off with a builder and another business man isn't very common and breaks the stereo type of women dancing in heels.

It's an anti realist ad as it is set in the real world but it's not something that would happen everyday.
The whole advert is all very surreal as it isn't something that would happen in a car park on  a normal day.

They use cold, industrial lighting for this ad, yet it's not dark. It's a well lit scene.

The tag line is 'You're so money supermarket' which is well known and everyone associates this tagline with them. They also mention about 'feeling epic' and thats how they make you feel after watching it and after watching the ad you do think that the whole advertisement is 'Epic'

The ad creates a memory of the ad as you remember 3 men having a dance off in a car park, and money supermarket have the logo plastered on the screen at the end of the advert.

29.1 Understanding the purposes of music video

Elise Vernon
Unit 29: Music Video Production

The purpose of music videos is to promote the artist and the song. music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes.

1.Promotion of a particular song
Michael Jackson - Thriller - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sOnqjkJTMaA
One of the main purposes is the promotion of a particular song, and a lot of the time the music video is the way to promote it. Once they have released one single off the album they then tend to release the entire album shortly after.
Thriller was and still is a revolutionary video as it was also a short film, and was the first of it's kind. No one had ever made a music video that was a short film. The video was a breakthrough.  MTV showed it 2 times a day due to how popular it was and to meet demands.
The sets, costumes and make up were amazing, and in detail you would think it was real. His dancing, as usual was amazing and from previous videos people love to see him dancing so this video had a lot of anticipation. A lot of people watched the video when it was released to see his dancing as people were mesmerised by him dancing. The song itself was a different song and the music was different to other songs, so people we excited to see what kind of video would come from the song. It was a Halloween, zombie themed video. The red jacket that Jackson wore was designed by John Landis' wife Deborah Landis to make him appear more "virile".  This red jacket is now iconic.
They use a lot long shots in the video so they can show Michael and all the other dancers in the video dancing. Up close shots were used to show Michael's face and to show what a scary zombie he was.
The song thriller is also the name of Michel's album, so this would help promote the album as well as the single. The single was released after the album was released, when this got released the album went back to number 1.This album has now gone onto be the world best selling album of all time. The thriller single was the final and 7th single released off the album.
Christopher Connelly in a January 1983 review in Rolling Stone gave it four out of five stars and described it as "a zesty LP" with a "harrowing, dark message". Comparing the songs on the album with the life challenges that the 24-year-old Jackson had faced since Off The Wall, Connelly remarks that he has "dropped the boyish falsetto" and is facing his "challenges head-on" with "a feisty determination" and "a full, adult voice".

2.Promotion of the artist's album
David Bowie - Blackstar https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kszLwBaC4Sw
I chose this song for the promotion of the artists album as David Bowie is a legendary artist and this whole album was amazing and the video was brilliant. It's an art-rock song with drum and bass parts. This album was Bowies 25th studio album and the last album he released before he passed away. The album was released 2 days before he passed away.
The album cover is adorned with a large black star on a plain white background, with the five star segments below the main star forming the word Bowie in stylised letters.

The video is 9:57 and is a short film music video. It's a very surreal video, It has a woman with a tail discovering a dead astronaut and taking his jewel-encrusted skull to an ancient, otherworldly town. The astronaut's bones float toward an eclipse, while a circle of women perform a ritual with the skull in the town's centre.
Theres a use of warm and cold lighting and a variety of different camera techniques are use including, close ups, medium and long shots.
Bowie is featured in the video he portrays  three distinct characters in the video: the introverted, tormented, blind "Button Eyes"; the "flamboyant trickster" in the song's middle section; and the "priest guy" holding the book embossed with the "★" symbol.

Having the album called 'Blackstar' as well as releasing a song called 'Blackstar' helps the album massively as they recognise the name and associate it with Bowie. The video was weird and creative like all Bowie video's so that also helped promote the album. Blackstar the single, is also the first track on the album.  The single Blackstar is the main opening song for the TV show 'The Last Panthers' which is also good promotion.
The co-producer from the album described the album as "Bowie's intended swan song and a "parting gift" for his fans before his death" It was received well from critics, one saying  "the most extreme album of [Bowie's] entire career", stating that "Blackstar is as far as he's strayed from pop."
When Bowie died 2 days after the album was released it was at number 1 and stayed there for 3 weeks. A lot of album sales came after he died but many were from before as this was David's first album in a few years so many fans were excited to see what he had come up with.

3.Promotion of a new artist or promotion of an artists change in musical direction or image
Miley Cyrus - We can't stop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrUvu1mlWco

This song was Miley's comeback to music. She had been one of the biggest disney stars and had played 'Hannah Montana' for many years, and was looked up to by young girls and boys all over the world. She was a clean disney channel star. Once she had finished Hannah Montana she was Miley Cyrus for a while and then came back in 2013 announcing her 4th studio album will be released. We can't stop was then released. The video released a lot of criticism as the lyrics were explicit and not what Miley usually sang. It's a pop and R&B song that talks of a house party and recreational drug use.The video was extremely provocative and it helped her break out of her clean, disney princess image.

The basis of the video is massive house party, with the guests engaging is weird actions. She twerks a lot and does lots of inappropriate dancing, considering she has a young audience and is very sexual in the way she sits, and moves. There were a lot of odds scenes like a women supposedly cutting her fingers off, skulls made out of french fries and  piles of bread.

After this video was released it was safe to say she was no longer an innocent teenage disney star.
The video uses many cuts back and forth between different scenes. Many close up's of Mileys face are used as well. A few months later a directors cut of the video was released and this was much more explicit and featured "more simulated sex, one oral sex gesture near the end and actually less Miley tongue overall.

One critic - Randall Roberts of Los Angeles Times felt that the song "seems as if it were written by an ninth-grader imagining her rebellious college sister’s lifestyle" and felt that it lacked creativity within Cyrus' catalog.
There is also product placement as she uses a beats pill and applies an EOS lip balm.

4. Synergy with another media product
Eminem - Lose Yourself ( from 8 mile) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eRhEcKHU5LY

This song was featured in the film '8 mile' and was written and produced by Eminem.
It is one of the feature songs in the movie.
Eminem was still a major, popular at the time the film the film got released. People who watch the film are able to find out who Eminem is and then people who listen to Eminem will find out about the film through the video. So they are promoting each other.

In the video for 'Lose yourself' there are a mixture of scenarios and settings. When the camera is focused on Eminem rapping they use medium shots as they show the top half his body and they also shoot it from a low angle so it's as if he is rapping down towards up and we're looking up to him. They do zoom out and then you do get a long, full body shot.

A majority of the scenes are from the film therefore helping to promote the film again. The video also brings to light some of Eminems own personal issues he has faced, such as the criticism from the rap community because of the colour of his skin and his difficult personal life.
In the video when there aren't scenes from the film he is seen rapping in from of the "8 Mile Rd. Mobile Court" sign that appears on the cover of the movie's soundtrack.
Thus promoting the album soundtrack as well. The song was used in the trailer for the movie, which helps promote the film and Eminem.
After the film was released it won many awards and nomination including, 'Best video from a film' which they won and nominations including 'Best Rap Video' and 'best male video'. It also won an oscar for best song in 2003.

5.Increase income for the record company

Drake - Started from the bottom - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RubBzkZzpUA

Drake released this song in 2013 under the label OVO Sound as well as a couple of other labels. Drake and his
long-time producer, Noah "40" ShebibO founded OVO sounds in 2012. OVO stands for Octobers Very Own.

This is the logo for OVO and is featured very heavily in the video for Started From The Bottom. Throughout the video you see Drake and other in the video wearing jumpers/t-shirt with the OVO owl on and Drake also wears a gold chain with the owl on. The logo is very well known and for fans who listen and keep up with Drake they will instantly know what the gold owl represents. This helps boost the record label massively and they gain a lot of recognition. The video has been viewed over 282,411,190 times on youtube which helps boost the company. The photo on the right shows the tops Drake and
other people wearing the OVO merchandise which is helping to promote the record company.
Drake is a very big name and is very successful and through his success he has now started selling OVO merchandise.
Promoting brand through his video's, and merchandise promotes the brand a lot and helps the brand build a bigger profile.
Since they founded the label in 2012 they have signed over 10 artists and producers including PARTYNEXTDOOR and Majid
Jordan. PND being the biggest act they have signed. They have made a lot of money from signing these artists and
gained even more popularity and success. PND has a big fan base which helps with promotion to the company.

6.Increasing the range of media an artist is active in
Jaden Smith - Scarface https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gefCdLAGK4E

I chose to use Jaden Smith as my example as he has branched out to do many things. He started acting in 2006 with his first major film role being 'The pursuit of Happyness' which is stared alongside his dad Will Smith. He has acted along side his dad in a few films. He carried on acting and in 2011 stared in 'The Karate Kid' which resulted in him rapping and singing the song 'Never say Never' with Justin Bieber. In October 2012 he released his first mix tape 'The Cool Cafe'.

In the song 'Scar face' he is rapping and singing and showing off his talents.  The public have branded Jaden 'Odd and weird' for breaking stereo types and this video shows he doesn't care what people think. The video opens with a man in a poncho flying Batman-Like onto a wall, Jaden is drinking out of a coffee mug the size of a watering can and Jaden dies right after rapping the lyrics, "The government be killing me." which is funny but it suits his style of music and the type of person he is. He stands up for what he believes in which i am so for. He likes to make his point about certain topics.

He has a different type of fashion style and has always made that clear to the media and his family. He also started his own clothing line. He wanted to break away from his families name and finish acting and become a rapper instead. He does still act.

To conclude, i think all these purposes are important but promoting the artist and promoting the album are most important. A music video is made to the artists preference and are made for many purposes.
